Neville D’Souza is disrespected by an Australian team member and forced to tie his shoes. The Indian team defeats the Australian team 7-1 after Neville scores a hat-trick. The Australian team is shocked. In the end, the Indian team finishes the Olympics in fourth place. Subhankar and Roy Choudhary intend to depose Rahim from the federation and install Subhankar as president in the interim. The Indian team is unable to advance as the match ends in a 1-1 draw. Rahim is fired by the federation as the Indian team’s coach due to poor performance. Rahim also finds out that his excessive smoking habit has caused him to develop lung cancer, and that his prognosis is not good.
The Indian team bus is attacked by demonstrators on the day of the championship game, when they are scheduled to play South Korea. The military is called in to protect the team. Even though Rahim’s condition worsens and he starts to cough up blood, he inspires the team with a speech of inspiration. Roy Choudhary has a change of heart and begins to support the Indian team after witnessing Rahim’s tenacity. For the game, Singh and Thangaraj also make a comeback to the squad. With a final score of 2-1, the Indian team wins the match and the Asian Games’ lone gold medal in football.
Critics :
Raising a child requires a village. And it takes a nation to produce a stellar squad that can defeat the greatest in the world. The core of “Maidaan” is the inspirational true story of Syed Abdul Rahim, the first Indian football manager and coach who led his team to two gold medals at the Asian Games in 1951 and 1962.
The power of one is the theme of Maidaan. This is a tale deserving of public attention. Patience and endurance are required for that first half and the punishing duration. However, you will reap rewards if you are prepared to put in the effort.
