Set in 2001 in rural India, Kiran Rao’s sophomore romp finds two young brides hilariously entwined in a riot of mistaken identities.
Laapataa Ladies, which translates to “Lost ladies,” is a comedy-drama released in 2024 in India in the Hindi language. It was produced by Jyoti Deshpande, Aamir Khan, and Kiran Rao.[7] The film, which stars Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, Chhaya Kadam, Ravi Kishan, and Sparsh Shrivastav, narrates the tale of two young brides who become lost while traveling by train.
The scene is “Nirmal Pradesh” in 2001. Phool, a rather gloomy and confused young lady, is being sent from her mayka to sasural. Deepu, her equally youthful husband, looks happier and more excited to welcome his new bride home. They board a train, his smiling and hers hidden behind a long, long ghoonghat.
His family greets the couple with surprise when they learn it’s the wrong bride. Although she tells them a different name and lies about her origins, her true name is Jaya. Meanwhile, Phool discovers the error at another station, but the station master is powerless to assist her since she does not know the name of Deepak’s village. In addition, she won’t return home because she doesn’t want to disgrace her family. Manju Mai, who has a tea stand on the platform, offers her assistance when she decides to stay at the station in case Deepak comes looking.
Manohar arrests Jaya because he believes she is a member of a gang of thieves. But he and Deepak find out that Jaya was forced into an abusive marriage against her will to Pradeep, who was only looking for dowry. She had been accepted to a Dehradun university and wished to work in organic farming. She made the decision to take advantage of the chance to fulfill her dreams and escape her fate with Pradeep after she and Deepak unintentionally stepped off the train. She had liquidated her jewelry to cover her Dehradun airfare and tuition. Pradeep shows up for Jaya at the police station. In front of the police, he assaults her and makes threats to get her mother to pay him the full dowry. Manohar claims that what he did was an offence.
Jaya’s posters enable Phool to eventually return to Deepak. Now that she is not with Pradeep, Jaya departs to continue her education in Dehradun.
